Armstrong School District to Honor School Lunch Heroes Serving Healthy Meals Celebrating School Lunch Hero Day on May 1, 2026

Armstrong School District will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 1, 2026, recognizing the dedicated nutrition professionals who work tirelessly to provide healthy meals to students each day.

Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, accommodating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Armstrong School District nutrition staff have a lot on their plate. School Lunch Hero Day, celebrated annually since 2013, was established by the School Nutrition Association in partnership with Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. This day provides an opportunity for students, parents, school staff, and the community to thank those who support the well-being of nearly 30 million students nationwide through nutritious school meals.

Across the district, school nutrition professionals will be honored and recognized by students, staff, and the community through special activities and expressions of appreciation. “School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools,” said Meredith Bailey, Food Service Director. “Armstrong School District serves approximately 1,700 breakfasts and 3,070 lunches on a daily basis. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success.”

Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias offer whole, low-fat, or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while meeting limits on calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. For many children, school meals are a vital source of daily nutrition and often the most balanced meal they receive.

Armstrong School District is proud to support student health by offering complimentary meals to all students. The district also prioritizes local sourcing, proudly serving fresh apples from Kistaco’s and beef from McCall’s Farm.Community members interested in joining the team are encouraged to apply for part-time cafeteria positions, which offer a family-friendly schedule with no nights, weekends, or holidays.
